Smart Architectural Aluminium has achieved the BES 6001 standard for responsible sourcing. Established by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), BES 6001 enables manufacturers to ensure and then prove that their products have been made with responsibly-sourced constituent materials. The standard provides an approach based on governance, supply chain and community interaction, with a focus on environmental performance improvements.

Smart made the decision to pursue certification to BES 6001 in 2016 and successfully achieved the standard in just two months. The company’s Managing Director, Eddie Robinson, said: “With public authorities, specifiers and architects all increasingly focusing on sustainable development, we felt it important to demonstrate our commitment to responsible sourcing and sustainable construction. The achievement of BES 6001 certification in such a short space of time is a real endorsement of this commitment and a great addition to our other environmental credentials, which include ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.

“In achieving the BRE’s standard, we recognised that how and from whom we buy our raw materials has a significant impact on the broader environment. By purchasing from reputable suppliers who adopt responsible practices, we hope to stimulate demand for socially- and environmentally-preferable products.”
